Stress hinders fertility
If getting pregnant was simply about having sex at the right time then the world would be a much happier place, sadly for many it is not that easy. The mind/body connection is so strong when it comes to conception.
Stress and anxiety release the hormones adrenaline and cortisol from the brain into the body. Too much can make it more difficult to conceive because they affect the part of your brain that controls other crucial hormones. Essentially stress hormones and sex hormones compete.
The more you ‘try’ to conceive, the more anxious and stressed you become. Time slows down and each cycle feels ten times longer than before. The possibility of conceiving consumes your thoughts and you struggle to focus on everyday living. Suddenly you see pregnant women everywhere that you go and you may catch yourself daydreaming about prams or pregnancy yoga. In the beginning you will quite happily tell yourself that you will let nature take it’s course and it will happen when it will happen. You feel excited and hopeful with your partner and truly believe that the magic has happened…and then your period arrives and the pressure starts to build. Suddenly you are on every app, tracking body temperature and googling early ovulation signs, ovulation signs and post ovulation signs….you get the picture. Sex becomes functional and scheduled, the 14 day wait is excruciatingly slow and the googling continues only this time it is ‘early signs of pregnancy’ or ‘have my nipples changed?’….and then your period arrives and the hope is shattered once again. Many couples will continue in this cycle for months or years before exploring fertility support, feelings of disappointment, self-blame and anxiety all too high. The hardest thing to hear when you are trying to address fertility issues is, ‘you must remain positive, try not to think about it too much.’ When the medical investigations begin and you are poked, scanned, tested, and prescribed it is even harder not to become obsessed by the process.
So how can I help?
Hypnotherapy releases stress and anxiety.
The mind/body connection is so strong when it comes to conception. HypnoFertility effectively supports the conception process whether that is natural or assisted by supported you through one of the most important and stressful times of your life: Pre-conception, ovulation, fertilisation, implantation and beyond.
When we are relaxed in hypnosis the brain produces endorphins which helps restore hormone balance, regulate the nervous system and promote a healthy immune system
Hypnotherapy will not only tackle stress and anxiety but many deep-rooted feelings that may affect our ability to conceive. The mind-body connection is so strong that key systems like the reproductive organs can become healthy, stronger and more efficient through carefully planned visualisation and suggestion. If you have never visualised a follicle in the ovaries developing a strong viable egg then I more than recommend giving it a try!
Every couple's story of infertility is different and unique to them. Every course of hypnofertility is created exclusively for you and your needs, I have never delivered the same session twice and this is a crucial part of the service. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to what you need.
But actually trying to relax is the hardest thing in the world when your mind is consumed with trying to conceive.
As a treatment Hypnofertility is growing in popularity because it has no negative side effects and can be used safely in pregnancy when women's other options are limited.
How does it work?
Our minds are incredibly powerful and the link between our thoughts and our physical body is undeniable. Our conscious mind can only focus on a few things at any given moment in time, but our subconscious is much, much bigger and is constantly processing the world around us and storing information away.
Hypnotherapy works with your subconscious mind to help overcome unwanted habits, behaviours and physical responses that have been stored throughout your life, whether wanted or not.
If you are struggling to conceive then hypnotherapy has huge potential benefits but it is not just about getting pregnant, hypnotherapy will teach you to feel more calm and in control where ever life takes you.
If deeply held unhelpful beliefs are inhibiting your fertility I can help you to gently release those beliefs, replacing them with a positive mindset that places you in the best possible alignment for a healthy pregnancy.
If an unhealthy work-life balance and chronic stress is the problem I will teach you how to use self-hypnosis to replace high levels of stress with a manageable inner calm and an increased resilience to stress.
Stress, IVF and the benefits of hypnosis
Each year 50,000 women in the UK go through the procedure, where their eggs are fertilised in a test tube before being implanted in the womb. About one in four of these operations results in a live birth.
A 2016 study conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham measured cortisol, a hormone that is thought to track stress levels, in the hair of 88 women trying to conceive through IVF. The results, published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, suggest that those with elevated levels of the chemical, which could correspond to sustained stress, are almost a third less likely to become pregnant.
The findings provide the first proper evidence that long term levels of cortisol, which are affected by many lifestyle factors including diet, exercise, caffeine and most notably stress, may play an important role in determining reproductive outcomes. Scientists believe that interventions to reduce cortisol prior to infertility treatment could therefore improve outcomes for the many thousands of couples undergoing IVF each year.
